RECAP – Holy Cross 66 San Diego 49
Baruch College – New York, NY , The afternoon game between San Diego (CA) and Holy Cross (Queens), turned out to be an impressive victory for Holy Cross in the battle of east coast versus west coast as San Diego appeared to be suffering from a severe case of jet-lag. They came out struggling and were unable to match Holy Cross’s intensity throughout the game.
Holy Cross turned it on early and often as they raced out to a 19-9 lead in the first quarter, thanks to back to back jumpers from 6’5 junior forward Tim Beinert with one of the jumpers being a 3 pointer. After Kayvon Roberts up and under reverse layup made it 25-11 at the end of the first quarter, San Diego was never in contention. Holy Cross used solid pressure defense and mad offensive rebounding to continue to build on their lead and were able to take a 37-19 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
San Diego was unable to manage any offense as they looked rusty from the long trip and were unable to get any production out of 6’8 Arizona recruit, Jamelle Horne. Horne was unable to take advantage of his height as he looked to be slumping after not managing a first half bucket. San Diego was forced to rely on 6’10 freshman phenom Jeremy Tyler for an offensive attack but Tyler was struggling to find his touch around the basket. The big man was able to get any post position he wanted but could not connect on numerous attempts. He did however, manage a couple of dunks and offensive rebounds to force the defense to continue to key on him.
Nonetheless Tyler did not do a good job on controlling the defensive rebounds allowing Holy Cross 24 offensive rebounds on the game, letting Holy Cross control the tempo.
The second half continued to be more of the same except for Jeremy Tyler finally being able to get in extra close for some easy bunny baskets. But Holy Cross continued to pour on the defense leading to 16 San Diego turnovers on the game and thus never letting San Diego get close. Jamelle Horne picked up a technical foul and never returned to the game making San Diego Coach Kenny Roy use a four guard lineup with the bigman Tyler in the middle. The strategy didn’t work as Holy Cross junior, 6’5 Sylven Landesberg, was able to constantly get free for layups and mid range jumpers. Landesberg finished the game with a team high 24 points and 11 rebounds as well as 2 steals and a block to garner the game’s Most Valuable Player Award. Holy Cross teammates Kayvon Roberts, Blaise Ffrench, and Shameel Carty all finished in double figures with 13, 10, and 10 points respectively. Roberts also added 10 rebounds. San Diego’s freshman Jeremy Tyler finished with a game high 25 points and 16 rebounds but could have easily scored 50 had he made his first half attempts. The performance earned Tyler the Sportsmanship Award as no other teammates finished in double figures.
NOTES: Holy Cross junior Tim Beinert and San Diego sophomore Jourdon Ward both took home the Academic Achievement Award.
